Munnar Hills

Telescope set to reveal 'Big Bang'

An ambitious project to build the world's largest radio telescope high in the Chilean Andes looks set to give astronomers their best ever view of deep space -- and provide them with a dramatic window back through time to the formation of the universe itself.

The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), currently being built in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile, will enable scientists to observe sub-millimeter radiation waves, giving them a far more detailed picture of the universe than has previously been possible with either optical or infrared telescopes.
The telescope, which is due to be completed by 2012, will consist of 66 radio antennae spread across the Llano de Chajnantor plateau, 5,000 meters above sea level.
When combined, the data collected from the dishes will provide a level of detail some 10 times sharper than the Hubble Space Telescope.
"The great thing about ALMA is that it will open up a genuinely new window on the universe," said Dr. John Richer, an astrophysicist at Cambridge University and ALMA project scientist.
"Over the past 20 or 30 years we've built [sub-millimeter] telescopes like the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope [in Hawaii] that have scraped the surface and shown us some of the really exciting objects emitting at these wavelengths. But ALMA is the first telescope that is going to look at these objects in great detail."
Located in one of the driest regions on earth at an altitude at which the atmosphere is 50 percent thinner than at sea level, ALMA is the highest construction project in the world and arguably the most challenging. Workers operate machinery from inside pressurized cabins or inhale from oxygen canisters to stave off the worst effects of altitude sickness.
But the sheer inhospitable nature of the site is also what makes it perfect for astronomy. The sub-millimeter radiation that the telescope will collect is usually absorbed by water, but the lack of moisture in the atmosphere will enable scientists to enjoy a clear view of the sky.
Currently just one prototype antenna has been built on the site, with building work on the rest due to commence in 2008. The $1 billion international project is being backed by the 11-nation European Southern Observatory as well as Chile, Spain, the U.S., Canada, Japan and Taiwan.
When fully operational, scientists predict the telescope will radically transform our view of the universe by allowing the study of previously undetectable objects, with new galaxies likely to be discovered at a rate of one every three minutes.
Richer said that up to half of the stars in the universe were obscured by space dust and would soon be visible for the first time, thanks to ALMA's ability to pick up sub-millimeter radiation waves that pass through the dust unchecked.
That makes the telescope ideally suited for studying the formation of stars and galaxies, previously shrouded from astronomical view by clouds of impenetrable cosmic debris, and compiling a detailed analysis of their chemistry.
By studying waves from galaxies that have taken millions of years to reach earth, the telescope could also shed new light on how the universe was shaped in the aftermath of the Big Bang by enabling astronomers to observe events just 300 million years into the estimated 13.7 billion-year life of the universe.
"Because ALMA can see through all the dust, we get a pristine, unobscured view of the early universe," said Richer.
"Equally, ALMA has the capability of looking right across to the edge of the universe which means going back in time to when the universe was very, very young. We will be able to look at things like new solar systems in formation and particularly the structure of so-called 'protoplanetary discs,' where we believe a star is growing in the middle and planets are forming around the outside."
With ALMA set to begin scientific work in the next few years, astronomers are already looking forward to further new telescopes opening up space to ever more detailed examination, Richer said.
The next stage is a new infrared space telescope -- the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) -- to replace Hubble, currently due to be launched in 2013. Beyond that, Richer predicted that successors to ALMA would also eventually be launched into space.
"ALMA is halfway into space but there are some things that genuinely you can't do from the ground and successors to ALMA in 30 years time may well be flying in space," said Richer.
"We hope the JWST will be flying and operating when ALMA is in its final operating form. You really have to study these objects at all the different wavelengths of light to understand them so when you combine the two the whole picture is tremendously exciting."

Microsoft may discount Vista

SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. is considering discounts or other promotions during the holidays to entice consumers to upgrade their PCs with Windows Vista, even though the new operating system isn't due to hit store shelves until January at the earliest.

Any end-of-the-year effort to spur PC purchases would likely please many retailers and computer manufacturers, who fear disappointing sales during the crucial holiday as consumers wait for the highly anticipated and long-delayed software.
Kevin Kutz, a director in Microsoft's Windows Client Group, confirmed Tuesday that the company is in talks with PC makers and retailers about a range of possible holiday promotions. But he declined to offer other details, such as whether they would apply only to new purchases.
Vista will be the first major upgrade to Microsoft's flagship operating system since Windows XP was released in 2001. After a series of delays, Microsoft said it appears to be on track to ship the business version of Vista in November and to consumers in January.
Last month, however, Kevin Johnson, co-president of the Microsoft division that includes Windows, said the company would not hesitate to delay Vista again if it has any concerns about product quality.
George Shiffler, research director at Gartner Group, revised his PC sales forecast for 2006 after Microsoft announced its latest Vista delay in March. He said he expects about 1.1 million fewer units to be sold worldwide than previously forecast.
Shiffler isn't expecting Microsoft to make the January release date. He notes that it usually takes Microsoft nine months to a year to ship the final product after its second "beta," or test, release. Vista Beta 2 came out in May.
He suggested some PC makers might be hoping for another delay, because marketing an operating system that doesn't exist yet is a formidable challenge they'd rather skip.
Instead, he thinks they'd rather wait for holiday and Super Bowl media distractions to end before trying to get customers excited about a new PC.
Microsoft's initial goal for the consumer market "was to get Vista-powered machines, new chips, Intel processors -- have the whole thing come together in time for Christmas," said Ted Schadler, an industry analyst for Forrester Research Inc.
Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis for NPD Group questioned whether any Vista promotion would work before consumers can actually buy it.
"The issue isn't that people don't want to buy a new PC ahead of a new operating system," Baker said. "People don't want to install a new operating system on a new PC."

Pluto no longer a planet, say astronomers

PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) -- Leading astronomers declared Thursday that Pluto is no longer a planet under historic new guidelines that downsize the solar system from nine planets to eight.

After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary
status it has held since its discovery in 1930. The new definition of what is -- and isn't -- a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.
Although astronomers applauded after the vote, Jocelyn Bell Burnell -- a specialist in neutron stars from Northern Ireland who oversaw the proceedings -- urged those who might be "quite disappointed" to look on the bright side.
"It could be argued that we are creating an umbrella called 'planet' under which the dwarf planets exist," she said, drawing laughter by waving a stuffed Pluto of Walt Disney fame beneath a real umbrella.
The decision by the prestigious international group spells out the basic tests that celestial objects will have to meet before they can be considered for admission to the elite cosmic club.
For now, membership will be restricted to the eight "classical" planets in the solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Much-maligned Pluto doesn't make the grade under the new rules for a planet: "a celestial body that is in orbit around the sun, has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a ... nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit."
Pluto is automatically disqualified because its oblong orbit overlaps with Neptune's.
Instead, it will be reclassified in a new category of "dwarf planets," similar to what long have been termed "minor planets." The definition also lays out a third class of lesser objects that orbit the sun -- "small solar system bodies," a term that will apply to numerous asteroids, comets and other natural satellites.
It was unclear how Pluto's demotion might affect the mission of NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, which earlier this year began a 91/2-year journey to the oddball object to unearth more of its secrets.
The decision at a conference of 2,500 astronomers from 75 countries was a dramatic shift from just a week ago, when the group's leaders floated a proposal that would have reaffirmed Pluto's planetary status and made planets of its largest moon and two other objects.
That plan proved highly unpopular, splitting astronomers into factions and triggering days of sometimes combative debate that led to Pluto's undoing.
Now, two of the objects that at one point were cruising toward possible full-fledged planethood will join Pluto as dwarfs: the asteroid Ceres, which was a planet in the 1800s before it got demoted, and 2003 UB313, an icy object slightly larger than Pluto whose discoverer, Michael Brown of the California Institute of Technology, has nicknamed "Xena."
Charon, the largest of Pluto's three moons, is no longer under consideration for any special designation.
Brown was pleased by the decision. He had argued that Pluto and similar bodies didn't deserve planet status, saying that would "take the magic out of the solar system."

GOD WHO LOVES LIKE A FRIEND

When Lord Jesus was sojourning in this earth He affectionately called His disciples as 'My friends'. Once when His mother and brothers came seeking Him. He asked, "Who are My mother and brethren?" He pointed His hand towards His disciples and said, "Behold, my mother and my brethren. He called each one of His disciples in each way to follow Him (Matthew 4:19; 8:22; 9:9). "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me." (Luke 9:23)The Word of God describes that Prophet Moses as the one whom the Lord knew face to face. When he fasted and prayed for forty in the Mount Sinai, the light of God's face shone on Moses. He saw His form and heard His sweet voice. Everything that Moses asked in the presence of the Lord was answered."The Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend." (Exodus 33:11)According to this verse, it is a fact that Moses spoke to God face to face like a friend. But God is not a friend only to Moses, but He has chosen many as His friends.

The Friend Who Walks With God

We read about many righteous people like Enoch, Noah Abraham and David etc. who walked with God.God considered Enoch as His friend and walked with him because he was righteous. If a man is righteous then the Lord will talk to him in visions and dreams and always walk with him. Noah walked with God because he was righteous and upright in his generations.The Bible says in Proverbs 11:20, "Such as are blameless in their ways are His delight." God was pleased with those who walk uprightly. Abraham was called as the friend of God. He
was called so because God found his heart faithful before Him and chose Him. Yes, those who deal
truthfully are His delight (Proverbs 12:22). That's why He loved Abraham so much and referred to him as 'my friend Abraham'."To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice?" (Proverbs 21:3). Then God chose David, "I have found David the on of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will." (Acts 13:22)The classic friendship that we see in the Bible is the friendship between Jonathan and David. Jonathan was the son of a king of a country while David was an ordinary shepherd. But when Jonathan saw how Goliath the great giant fell down dead at the hands of David he started to love David a lot. We read in 1 Samuel 18:1, 'the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul".When Jonathan died in a war David lamented like this: "I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; You have been very pleasant to me; Your love to me was wonderful, Surpassing the love of women." (2 Samuel 1:26)"Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?" (Amos 3:3)Dear friend, similarly the Lord of Lords loves you also. Your life get knitted with God. His love is marvellous! He is anxiously waiting to talk to you, hear your prayers and answer them. When you speak to Him, He will get into the oneness of mind. The love you show will move His heart. He will also give what you desire and ask Him, and give you an immeasurable joy.

Friend Who is Afflicted

"In all their affliction He was afflicted, and the angel of His presence saved them; in His love and in His pity He redeemed them; and He bore them and carried them all the days of old." (Isaiah 63:9)"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity." (Proverbs 17:17)"Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep." (Romans 12:15)That's love, friendship. When the Lord's friends and companions are afflicted in their life, He is also afflicted. He carries us because of His love and pity. That's the greatness in being His friend.Lord Jesus loved John a lot among all his disciples. He was leaning on the bosom of Jesus. Lord Jesus was hanging on the Cross and the blood was oozing out of His wounds. He looked at His mother and His favourite disciple standing near the Cross. On one side, He was troubled when He saw tears in His mother eyes but on the other side He saw His disciple John, who used to rest leaning on His bosom and His heart melted. He looked at John and said, "My loving disciple, my brother, friend, behold your mother. I give you my mother to comfort you. Similarly the love of the Lord will abide with us forever at all times!"A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." He who knew no sin became a curse for us (Galatians 3:13).Today people may curse us. But as the Lord God is our friend. He accepts all the curses on Him and makes the curses as blessings (Deuteronomy 23:5).One day morning a man was passing by a street in Houston in the United States of America. He saw a beautiful garden in a house on that street. He was captivated for a moment by the beauty of the flowers. An innocent little girl was touching and playing with those flowers. This friend who saw that suddenly became afraid and was tensed. The reason was a poisonous snake was creeping slowly towards the little girl. He did not know what to do. He was scared. If he shouts and calls her, she would turn back and immediately the snake would bite her. Finally he took a decision. He leaped between the girl and the snake that was ready to bite her. The snake became very angry. It kept on biting him and induced the poison in him. At that time the girl's father opened the door and peeped unto the garden. He was shocked at the sight. They ran carrying the man bitten by the snake to the hospital. The little girl's life was saved. He underwent treatment in the hospital for many months and then recovered. The girl's parents whenever they see the man whose body was hurt due to the snake bite would say, "Oh, how much he has loved our daughter; the bruises on his body are for our daughter isn't it?Similarly, Jesus said, "Let the devil and the power of sorcery and witchcraft do everything in my body and let me become a sacrifice on the Cross". He offered Himself on the Cross. The sins and curses of the worldly people were cast upon Him and He accepted them joyfully. He loves you freely. Accept Him as your friend.Friend, He will walk with you. He will be afflicted in your afflictions. He will touch you with His hands that contains bruises that He earned by giving His life on the Cross. He will change your curses into blessing. He will heal your sickness. He will be your friend till you breathe your last. He will never forsake you till you go to heaven. When you go to heaven He will say, "I loved you with an everlasting love and drew you with love." He will draw you towards Him and make you live with Him forever.

Talks urged on Iran nuclear issue

Iran says its nuclear programme is for power generation onlyChina and Russia have said negotiations are the only way of easing tension over Iran's nuclear programme, following Tehran's offer of talks on the issue.
Beijing said it hoped all parties would show calm, patience and flexibility so that negotiations may be resumed.
Iran has offered "serious talks" with six world powers in response to a UN demand that it stop enriching uranium.
It has until September to suspend enrichment or risk sanctions amid fears that it is building a nuclear bomb.
Tehran denies it is building a bomb and maintains it has a right to civilian nuclear technology.
The US, UK, Russia, China, France and Germany have offered Iran a package of incentives - including help with civilian nuclear technology - in exchange for suspending enrichment.
Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, said on Tuesday that his country was ready for "serious talks" on the issue - but did not give any more details of its response to the offer.
'Negotiated settlement'
A Chinese foreign ministry statement said Beijing was "carefully studying" Iran's reply.
"China has always believed that seeking a peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic talks is the best choice and in the interests of all parties concerned," the ministry said.
Russia echoed the Chinese stance, stressing its commitment to a negotiated solution to the crisis over Iran's nuclear programme.
Russia will continue "seeking a political, negotiated settlement concerning Iran's nuclear programme," Interfax news agency quotes a Russian foreign ministry spokesman as saying.
Sanctions threat
Although Mr Larijani has spoken of "serious talks", what the Security Council needs to know is whether Iran is willing to suspend uranium enrichment by 31 August or not, says the BBC News website's world affairs correspondent, Paul Reynolds.
If it is not, or gives no clear response on this, the US and its allies will take it as a "no" and will press for sanctions, though these would need a separate council decision, our correspondent adds.
Iranian officials had previously said the response would address ambiguities over its right to nuclear technology.
Enriched uranium is used as fuel for nuclear reactors, but highly enriched uranium can also be used to make nuclear bombs.
Iran points out that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) it is entitled to a nuclear power programme and says it has broken no rule.
But the Western powers accuse Iran of concealing an enrichment programme, and Washington has refused to rule out military action.

Global warming may create 'novel' climates

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Some climates may disappear from Earth entirely, not just from their current locations, while new climates could develop if the planet continues to warm, a study says.
Such changes would endanger some plants and animals while providing new opportunities for others, said John W. Williams, an assistant professor of geography at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Using global change forecasts prepared for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, researchers led by Williams used computer models to estimate how climates in various parts of the world would be affected.
Their findings are being published in this week's online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The IPCC, representing the world's leading climate scientists, reported in February that "warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observation of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice and rising global average sea level."
Tropical regions in particular may face unexpected changes, particularly the rain forests in the Amazon and Indonesia, Williams' researchers concluded.
This was surprising, Williams said in a telephone interview, since the tropics tend to have little variation in weather.
But that also means temperature changes of 3 or 4 degrees in these regions might have more impact than a change of 5 to 8 degrees in a region that is accustomed to regular changes.
Species living in tropical areas may be less able to adapt, he said, adding that that is speculative and needs further study.
Areas like the Southeastern United States and the Arabian Peninsula may also be affected, the researchers said.
And they said mountain areas such as in Peruvian and Colombian Andes and regions such as Siberia and southern Australia face a risk of climates disappearing altogether.
That doesn't mean these regions would have no climate at all -- rather their climate would change and the conditions currently in these areas would not occur elsewhere on Earth.
That would pose a risk to species living in those areas, Williams observed.
If some regions develop new climates that don't now exist, that might provide an opportunity for species that live there, Williams said. "But we can't make a prediction because it's outside our current experience and outside the experience of these species."
Alan Robock, a professor of environmental sciences at Rutgers University welcomed the report, calling it the first he has seen "that not only looks at species extinctions, but also looks at regions where novel climates will appear."
"While the idea of novel climates may seem like a positive consequence of humans using the atmosphere as a sewer and causing rapid, unprecedented climate change, I would argue that mitigation of our pollution should be an even stronger reaction to these results," said Robock, who was not part of the research team.
"The potential consequences and how these new regimes will be populated are poorly known, and the potential for new threats to humans through disease vectors could be a real danger," he said.
